New Penn Torque and International Reels

Penn set the standard for big game reels long ago.

Then the company began making smaller reels for big game for sport.

Now the company is introducing even smaller, lighter reels for big game.

Penn’s new versions of the Torque Star Drag Reels and new International 12 Reels are built to fish for big game like tuna with lighter line and on lighter rods than the previous versions.

The New Torque Star Drags

The TRQ12, TRQ15, TRQ25, TRQ30 and TRQ40 are new versions of Penn's Torque
Star Drag Reels.

Penn Torque Star Drags
were already available in the TRQ100, 200 and 300 models

The new Torques are
made for lines ranging
from 10-pound to 30-pound
mono or 15-pound to 50-pound braid.

The originals are made for
12-pound to 65-pound mono
or 30-pound to 100-pound braid.

The new versions weigh from 16.9 to 22.3 ounces, and the old weigh from 23 to 33 ounces.

The new Torques are made with machined, anodized aluminum bodies and side plates.

The main and pinion gears are stainless steel.

Penn’s Live Spindle Design allows the spool to free float independent of the pinion gear and the spindle, making the reel one of the most castable in its class, the company says.

The spool includes line-capacity rings to let the angler know the percentage of line left on the reel when fighting a fish.

The reels feature Penn’s Versa-Drag, HT-100 Washers and seven shielded, stainless-steel bearings.

The suggested retail prices range from $399.95 to $449.95.

International 12 Reels

Penn’s International Reels that were already available are arguably the best big-game reels ever made.

The new International 12 is a smaller version of those reels.

Like the originals, the International 12 is available in V, VS and VSX models.

The V is single speed, and the
VS is two speed, and the VSX is two speed with extreme drag and is built for heavier line.

The V in the model also indicates that the reels are the latest versions of the Internationals.

The International 12V and 12VS can be spooled with 875 yards of
12-pound mono or 1,450 yards of 20-pound braid.

The 12VSX can be spooled with 360 yards of 30-pound mono or
750 yards of 50-pound braid.

The body and side plates are machined from high-strength, lightweight, aircraft-grade aluminum that does not flex under heavy load, the company says.

The main gear is larger and stronger than the competition’s, Penn says, and the pinion gear is one piece.

Both the main and pinion gears are made from stainless steel.

International Reels have always featured arguably the best drag in
the industry, and the International 12’s feature the same drag, named Dura-Drag.

The suggested retail prices are $449.95 for the 12V and $499.95 for both the 12VS and 12VSX.
