3-TAND Fly Reels

“If you know Van Staal and
ZeeBaaS, you know me,”
Rob Koelewyn says.

He’s the founder and
designer of those
fishing reels.

It would seem
difficult to top them.

But maybe they could
be equaled.

He’s accomplished that,
apparently.

Koelewyn this year introduced 3-TAND fly-fishing reels.

On the Salmon River, N.Y.,
on a trip that the owner
took this September.

They’re called the T-Series, and are meant for fishing saltwater, including for striped bass, bonefish, tarpon and more, but also for rivers, for salmon and steelhead.

The company expects to introduce lighter
fly reels soon for freshwater.

The T-Series are meant to be superior reels but at affordable prices.

Years ago, Koelewyn lead the industry in
high-priced reels, the company says.

Now, he’s finding a way to bring the price down, it says.

The T-Series reels come in seven weights from 5 to 15.

Koelewyn is known for a waterproof housing and killer drag, the company says.

The housing protects the insides,
like the gears.

The drag on the fly reels is called
a nano-carbon fiber system, a unique
2-disc, 4-disc and 6-disc drag,
built to be strong and smooth, with
“zero start-up inertia,” the company says.

To design the drag, heavy pressure
was reportedly exerted on it, pushing
the temperature beyond 180 degrees
Fahrenheit, for significant periods of
time, simulating a large fish’s run.

“The results: a smooth and flawless
performance,” the company says.

Other features include interchangeable
spools, like to upgrade from a 7 to 9-weight
or a 10 to 12, making the 3-TAND essentially two reels in one .

That ability helps make
the reels affordable.

No need to buy multiple reels,
in other words.

Prices for the reels range from
$299.95 to $599.95.

If you know Koelewyn’s
other reels, that’s affordable.

Arguably, his other reels are worth
their high prices.

The new company, 3-TAND, also
makes high-quality, foldable
sand spikes and fishing pliers.

They look great, too.
