Fathom Star Drag Reel

Bait-casting reels are built for that: casting.

The theory is that the
line rips off the reel more freely than on other types of reels,
like spinning reels.

If anglers know how
to use them well.

Many don’t.

So, if a bait-caster is built to be more castable, all the better.

Penn’s Fathom Star Drag Reel, set to be introduced in October,
is the most castable reel in the market, the company says.

The Live Spindle Design, as Penn calls it, is revolutionary,
the company says.

The spool spins independently of the spindle and pinion gear, significantly reducing friction when casting, Penn says.

The fixed-spindle-design of other reels slows the spool’s resistance, reducing casting distance, the company says.

Plus Live Spindle Design improves the retrieve, “because the spindle and pinion do not need to turn relative to each other during heavy loads," it says.

That’s unlike reels with fixed spindle design “that results in difficult retrieve and erratic drag,” Penn says.
