9/2/09 -- The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission yesterday, in a conference call that was announced in the below press release, voted 7 to 4 to keep open the sea bass and porgy seasons. The ASMFC had considered closing the fisheries because catches are projected to exceed the yearly quota. That means tougher restrictions will likely be placed on bag limits next year. The National Marine Fisheries Service could eventually take emergency action to close the fishing in federal waters beforehand. The New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council had slated a meeting for tomorrow to discuss potentially closing the sea bass and porgy seasons, but the state is unlikely to close the seasons now. The ASMFC also decided to take no action regarding a potential overage for fluke, but that was less of a concern for anglers for now because the fluke season was about to close.
Here's the original press release about the conference call and
the potential closures that are now averted:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, AUGUST 26, 2009
ASMFC Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Board
Will Meet September 1, 2009, to Discuss Recreational Overages
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Board will meet September 1, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. to discuss recreational overages via a web-based conference call. The Commission's Interstate Fisheries Management Program Policy Board directed the Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Management Board (Board) to consider potential overages for all three species and take action prior to September 1. This directive was taken in response information presented to the Policy Board regarding available black sea bass preliminary recreational harvest estimates and projections indicating that harvest will likely result in significant quota overages. Board action could include emergency measures to prevent further overages in recreational fisheries for summer flounder, scup (porgy), and black sea bass.
