Friends tuna fished mid-shore on a trip, tackling one bluefin, not big, and a bunch of mahi mahi, Capt. Joe from <b>Sour Kraut Sportfishing</b> from Leonardo said on Sunday. They saw thresher sharks jumping.

Mike from <b>TAK Waterman Surf n Fish</b> in Long Branch didn’t hear much about tuna lately, except about a few inshore, he said. The fish sounded close in. Wind was brutal this week.

<b>Shark River Inlet</b>

Good fishing for bluefin tuna was socked on popper plugs, Bob from <b>Fisherman’s Den</b> wrote in an email.

<b>Manasquan Inlet</b>

Fifteen tuna were chunked at night at Hudson Canyon on a Point Pleasant Beach party boat on a trip, Eric from <b>The Reel Seat</b> in Brielle said on Monday. Maybe a few tuna were moving into the canyons. A few tuna, not many, a mix of yellowfins and longfins, were chunked at the canyons previously. Plenty of mahi mahi and squid swam the waters at least through the weekend. Afterward, trips to the canyons seemed weathered out. Lots of bluefin tuna moved into the Shark River Reef area. Customers trolled, jigged and popper-plugged them. Abundant false albacore held there. From there to the ocean near Manasquan Inlet harbored lots of bonito and 2- to 3-pound bluefish at lumps and structure. Albies and bonito were everywhere. On Wednesday, Eric gave no reports about tuna. Weather seemed too rough to even ask him about the fishing. But that day he said tons and tons of bonito schooled from the surf to 60- or 70-foot depths. They also schooled from there to the Mudhole, but were really balled up from the wash to 60 or 70 feet.

No tuna were caught but fishing for mahi mahi was incredible on a 30-hour trip that returned last Friday on the <b>Gambler</b> from Point Pleasant Beach, a report said on the party boat’s website. “I don’t know what to say about the tunas,” it said. The water looked prime lately, and looked great where the boat fished. That was at a 71-degree temperature break, and lots of Sargasso filled the water. The fishing kicked in late last year, so the crew hopes the catches break open soon. At night on the trip, a small swordfish and a small mako shark were released, and lots of squid swam. Jigging for the squid was amazing. Two or three extra-large could be jigged at once. Anglers caught the squid for bait, and some kept the squid to take home to eat. After daybreak, no tuna bite broke open, so the trip pot-hopped for mahi. That angling was incredible. Bluefin tuna were seen every day during bottom-fishing on the party boat <b>Jamaica II</b> from Brielle, Capt. Ryan wrote in an email. On most trips, a couple bit and broke off. Wind blew strongly this week. But the bottom trips still got out for sea bass and porgies, and caught great.

<b>Barnegat Inlet</b>

The anglers limited out on mahi mahi and bagged one yellowfin tuna and some golden tilefish and blueline tilefish on a trip last weekend on the <b>Miss Barnegat Light</b>, the party boat’s Facebook page said. A trip was supposed to fish offshore for tuna Thursday to today on the <b>Super Chic</b> from Barnegat Light, Capt. Ted said before the outing. He’d see whether the trip had the weather to sail.

Mahi mahi had been docked at <b>Bobbie’s Boat Rentals</b> in Barnegat Light, Vince Sr. said, though wind lately kept trips from running.

<b>Cape May Inlet</b>

Capt. George from the <b>Heavy Hitter</b> from Cape May knew about trips that fished offshore that caught mahi mahi and found tuna fishing slow, he said Sunday. He didn’t answer a phone call for a report later in the week, apparently because wind blew too strongly for news about boating.
